About the department

Understanding and studies on each area in the world are essential to build the future of Korea in the 21st century. Of that, Japan that neighbors Korea has taken a leap again as a power of the Asia-Pacific region as well as an major economic power in the world. So nurturing talented persons who know well Japan is urgent even for mutual cooperation and to solve continuous issues and conflicts. The Department of Japanology, Hallym University with the highest level of various Korean various educational programs and facilities and the excellent and passionate faculty will be an optimal choice for the students who learn Japan.

Educational objectives

Educational objectives of the Department of Japanese Studies are to nurture and produce professional human resources to handle Japan that is very important to us in the era of globalization in the 21st century. For this, the Department of Japanese Studies makes students learn core knowledge about Japanese society, history, and literature and the relationship between Korea and Japan widely based on systematic Japanese education and teaches students to develop the basic fundamentals as local experts by preparing the highest level of educational conditions in Korea including providing opportunities to utilize all kinds of programs of on-site training in Japan and various facilities in the university.

Prospects and career

Career after the graduation is very various. If students try to continue their studies, they can go to graduate schools of Japanese national, public, and private universities and general graduate schools, simultaneous interpretation graduate schools, and special graduate schools to nurture international experts. The students who graduated from the Department of Japanology have led in-depth graduate school life by selecting their own fields of interests. Now, the seniors who obtained doctorates have been produced.

Meanwhile, opportunities for getting jobs are widely opened. The students have been very active in all kinds of fields including international exchange of Japanese local governments, domestic and overseas big companies and small and medium-sized businesses, the government and local governments (International exchange teams in cities and provinces), airlines, broadcasting companies, research centers, publishers, advertising agencies, travel agencies, hotels, and cultural event projects based on Japanese skills and insights into Japanology obtained from the Department of Japanology. There are graduates who are active as free lancers as they become Japanese instructors, interpreters, sightseeing guides, and professional translators. The path to be able to be active in curricula for teaching profession (Was established in 2007) as teachers.
