About the Department

Students in the department of social welfare learn knowledge and skills to address many social problems including family, children, senior citizens and adolescence delinquency due to industrialization and modernization. Students also study methods to develop their practices at social service agencies. Studies on social welfare are required for modern society where individual, psychological and social structural problems occur. Social welfare is one of the major future-oriented studies that its necessity has increased.

Educational objectives

Educational objectives of the Department of Social Welfare in Hallym University are to foster professionals in the field of social welfare who work in governments, public institutions, and domestic and overseas social welfare agencies for the improvement of well-being of people. Since 1982 when the department was established, the Department of Social Welfare in Hallym University has committed to educate practice-oriented professionals in social welfare areas. As a result, great numbers of graduates have played central roles in various social welfare areas. Recently, the department has promoted best educational environments such as opening lectures taught in English, providing opportunities for overseas training and exchange students programs to improve the competence of students as professionals in globalized environments.  The Department of Social Welfare in Hallym University has continued to develop with the help of the high standing faculties' passionate education, differentiated and systematic educational programs and passionate atmospheres for student learning. The department has received national projects supported by the Ministry of Education based on the department's competence and the University's substantial financial support.

Specialized fields Major duties and employment areas
Social Welfare Officials Civil servants who are in charge of managing programs for needy people in the field of public social welfare. Take charge of policy making and implementation of public programs for social welfare in national and local governments (e.g. Cities and provinces, cities, counties, and boroughs, EupMyeonDong offices)
Medical social workers Intervene in patients and their families to address their psychosocial and economic problems (Hospitals, etc.)
School social workers / Educational social workers Work to help the well-being of students in schools (Elementary, middle, and high schools, etc.)
Social Workers in Mental Health Work to help the well-being of patients with mental health problems and their families (Mental health facilities, health centers, national and public mental health institutions, mental health network centers, etc.)
Correctional social workers Educate criminals or juvenile delinquents and provide welfare services to them and prevent their repeated crime (Correctional facilities under the Ministry of Justice, etc.)
Military social workers Provide counseling for soldiers to help them address difficulties in military services (The military)
Industrial social workers Provide counseling and advocating activities to improve workers' working and living conditions (Domestic foreign companies and domestic large companies, etc.)
Professionals of medical tour As medical tour coordinators and marketers, they provide one-stop services to meet various needs of foreign medical tourists during their visit in Korea (Hospitals, tourism organizations, travel agencies, etc.)
Social welfare resource marketers Work to obtain and distribute resources for social welfare (Corporate Social Responsibility, Community Chest of Korea, Various welfare foundations, and NGO groups)
Child Welfare Professionals Are responsible for projects to support children and their families with the need for help (Institutions related to children welfare including national child protection agencies, Sunflower Women and Children Centers, and children's welfare centers)
Youth Welfare Professionals Are responsible for projects that support adolescents and their families with the need for help (Youth Training Centers and Youth Support Centers)
Welfare professionals for senior citizens Are responsible for projects that support senior citizens and their families with the need for help (Senior Welfare Centers, Senior Care Centers, Elderly Protection Agencies, etc.)
Welfare Professionals for disabled people Provide counseling, education, and protection activities for the disabled and their families (Societies for the Welfare of the Handicapped, Disabled Self-support Centers, and living facilities for disabled people, etc.)
Welfare Professionals for women Carry out projects that protect, consult, and prevent family violence, sexual violence, and sex trafficking victims (Family violence, sexual violence, prostitution counseling centers and protection facilities, etc.)
Family Welfare Professionals Help single-parent families, grandfather and grandson families, and multi-cultural families to address their various family problems (Healthy family support centers and multi-cultural family support centers, etc.)
Community Welfare Professionals Provide social welfare services to residents in local community (Welfare centers, etc.)
Professionals for poverty and self-sufficiency Carry out job placements services and self-sufficiency projects to help needy people and their families.
