The spring 2021 semester is in full swing at Hallym and with midterm exams around the corner ISSO thought that now would be a good time to catch up with some of our international exchange students who are living and studying on campus.

Following on from their article in February about their experiences during their 14 day'self-isolation' ISSO asked the same four students for an update about their campus life:

Camilla from Germany:

How have you adapted to Hallym campus life and face to face classes during Korea's continued social distancing?

It´s amazing to have face to face classes again, after having 100% online classes back in Germany. After moving to Hallym International Dorm after quarantine and being finally able to interact with Korean students, it gets much easier to adapt to uni life here. Unfortunately, I have not been able to try any extracurricular programs but as an international in HID you will meet a lot of new people.

What has been the most enjoyable part of your campus life so far?

So far I have really enjoyed my classes, as well as going to the gym from time to time and the campus cafés. I would also recommend the library, which is where I can concentrate the best since this is difficult to do with roommates.

As a HID tutor, please describe your weekly tutoring routine and experiences of working with Hallym's Korean students to date.

I meet once a week with my group, consisting of five students, and we play some warm up games for the first half of the session.

The tutees are also required to do some independent study, like watch a series or read a book, so in the second half we discuss their individual work. For the second session all tutees and tutors meet with the professor where each group has to do a presentation, which we prepare during the individual session.

I would definitely recommend this role, since it is a nice way to get to know more about Korea, but at the same you will have less free time, so I did miss out on some fun opportunities. In general, it´sa lot of fun though.

Nelly from Switzerland:

How have you adapted to Hallym campus life and face to face classes during Korea's continued social distancing?

All the classes in Switzerland are still online, so I really appreciate being in Chuncheon and having face to face classes. Even though we have to wear the mask all the time, we get used to it. The social distancing rule is the only thing that bothers me a bit, because you will meet so many new people at once, but since are not allowed to be more than four people in the restaurants or on the streets, you always have to split up .

What has been the most enjoyable part of your campus life so far?

The most enjoyable part of the campus life for me is that you meet new people every day. Furthermore, every day is so exciting because you never really know what is going to happen next, so it never gets boring.

As only two weeks passed by, I do not really have a tutoring routine yet. In the first seminar we mainly played games to get to know each other. After the second seminar our group will have their first presentation, in this case, we discussed in the second seminar the questions for our presentation and divided the topic. On the one hand, tutoring itself is not that easy, because most of the Korean students are very shy and not talkative. On the other hand, it makes a lot of fun and you can learn from each other. I would definitely recommend you to tutoring if you can, because the best part is that you will make new friends and you can broaden your horizon with them.

Lorna from France:

How have you adapted to Hallym campus life and face to face classes during Korea's continued social distancing?

Campus life was very easy to adapt to. The teachers are all very nice and very understanding. I also feel very safe because there are a few rules we have to follow to keep COVID at the lowest risk in the university. We have to scan our QR code, take our temperature, wash our hands as often as possible.

Some classes are either online or face to face which makes it easier to study around the other classes. I didn't choose a lot of classes, which gives me a lot of time to study and other personal things.

The adaptation is very easy because everyone is very friendly and aware that we are new on the campus, therefore even teachers are willing to help us if we have any problems with anything. Adapting to Hallym University was a great experience!

Everything we could possibly need is available at the university as well (food, bakery, convenience store…) which makes it also very easy.

What has been the most enjoyable part of your campus life so far?

The most enjoyable part of campus life is how friendly everybody is. If you ever need anything or if you look lost, somebody will come forward and ask if you need any help. The students are so nice and always happy to help everyone and spend time with us (international students). It is such a nice and friendly environment!

Jessica from Austria:

How have you adapted to Hallym campus life and face to face classes during Korea's continued social distancing?

Hallym campus life is different from what I know from my home university. First, it was a bit hard to accept that the attendance is mandatory in all of my courses. Also, doing homework on a regular basis was new for me. However, I got used to that quickly.

Being in class with attendance and doing homework gives you the chance to participate more in most classes. Also the exam in the end will count less and hopefully takes some stress.

Living in a dormitory and sharing a room with two other people is the most uncomfortable part at Hallym University campus. But normally you don't spend a lot of time in the room.

The best part of living on a campus is that everything you need is close. Gyms to the classes, to convenience stores, the gym and canteens are really short. Also, most of the students live on campus so you meet people very easily. What I really appreciate about the campus life as well as the general life in Korea is that the people are very courteous and help you out a lot.

What has been the most enjoyable part of your campus life so far?

The best part of studying at Hallym University is definitely having most classes face-to-face. The classes are rather small, so you can get in touch with the professors and other students easily. For me the best course is “encounters with Korea”, not only the topics are interesting but it really helped me to adapt to Korean culture.

Also, I enjoy being able to do different activities on campus and meeting new people.

Being a tutor is a very good experience. You get in touch with some Koreans and have a fun time tutoring. Once a week you attend a practical English class held by a professor. Mainly, you sit with the students and discuss different topics in a small group. Also, you have one tutoring lesson per week where you talk with your students, prepare their presentations and play games with them. However, what you need to know before is that the tutoring is paid little compared to the time of work.
