Establishing a criterion for education through passion and conviction

About the department

Audiology is the interdisciplinary study related to hearing loss that is currently marked the 3rd appearance ratio of disorders in Korea. Students get to study its theories and practice about audiological assessment, auditory training, and aural (re)habilitation. The major fields include basic audiology, clinical audiology, rehabilitative audiology, hearing aids, cochlear implantation and alternative technology, pediatric audiology, geriatric audiology, industrial audiology, and educational audiology.
Students get to complete expert education that can preserve normal hearing and prevent, evaluate, and rehabilitate the abnormal hearing status. People with hearing loss have tended to increase domestically and internationally, as more congenital hearing loss are found due to popularization of newborn hearing screening, presbycusis increases due to aging of the population, and noise induced hearing loss goes up due to industrialization and the expansion of individual sound systems. Accordingly, social concern and needs are rapidly expanding of Audiology major. It is estimated that about 5 million persons, about 10% of the total population in Korea is hearing-impaired persons. Therefore, its career area is various and promising.
Educational objectives are to foster global experts of the audiology field. The students will learn the problem-solving ability and creative knowledge and techniques through the curriculums focusing on practice at the international levels.

Audiology program

There are two majors in Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, Speech-Language Pathology Program and Audiology programs. As a freshmen, students are enrolled in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology and learn the basic knowledge of both majors including introductions of both majors. At the end of the first ear, before becoming the sophomore, students get to select the appropriate major. The characteristics of each major is as follows.

Certificate of Competence in Audiology (audiologist license)

Career

If students pass a qualifying examination after completing the major in audiology, they can obtain an audiologist license selected as the second rank of the promising occupation for the future in 2007 (The JoongAng Ilbo dated on January 3, 2007). After getting Certificate for the audiologist license, they can work in the following areas:
 
General and private hospitals
Research institutes
Hearing impairment rehabilitation centers
Hearing aid company
Cochlear implant company
Community centers related to hard of hearing and deaf schools
Private hearing aid centers
Now, more than 90% of graduates are getting jobs in the fields related to the major in the metropolitan area and the whole country.

Graduate Program

If students hope to study and research audiology and related hearing science in graduate school, they can go to general graduate school of this university. And if students want to get a job and study further simultaneously, they can do these together at Hallym University of Graduate Studies in Seoul. Many students who want to study abroad further such as Ph. D, program get trained in the graduate school completing intensive clinical specialist courses and a master's program. Majoring in pure audiology is the only one chance in Hallyum University in Korea. Therefore, the Hallym Universtiy is the mecca of audiology in Korea. We already produced many professors in several universities in Korea. And now, symposiums and national research projects have very actively been done in graduate school.

Speech-Language Pathology Program

About the department

Speech-language pathologists specialize in the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human communication disorders The major of Speech-Language Pathology is designed to educate undergraduate students to be a speech and language pathologist who assess and treat five major language and speech disorders such as child language disorders, neurogenic speech and language disorders, articulation and phonological disorders, voice disorders, and fluency disorders. As the number of children and adults with innate or acquired language disorders, as well as the number of seniors and multicultural and bilingual families increase, there has been a growth in interest in language and speech pathology. Accordingly, the demand for speech and language pathologists who can serve at welfare facilities and rehabilitation centers is growing. Communication disorders are caused by speech and language disorders, and they often accompany other disabilities including intellectual disabilities and emotional and behavioral disorders. The major of Speech-Language Pathology helps promote or recover communication skills for human relations, academic achievements and career life, in order to improve quality of life.

Achievable Certificates

2nd Grade Certificate for K-SLP (Korea Speech-Language Pathologist)

Career

All students are qualified to take a national examination to be a speech-language therapist after completing all requirements for four-year program. After getting Certificate for K-SLP, they can work as a speech-language therapist. Speech-language therapist works with persons of all ages from infancy to the elderly and work in a variety of professional settings as follow:
 
- Speech and Language clinic in general and private hospital
- Special or public schools
- Nursery homes
- Rehabilitation center for the disabled, senior welfare centers, and welfare centers
- Child development center
- Private speech-language therapy center

Graduate Program

If students hope to be a researcher or specialized professional as a speech-language therapist, it is recommended to going to graduate school. We have two kinds of graduate program. One is a master and a doctoral program in Hallym graduate school that centered on academic studies and activities, the other is a master program in Hallym graduate school of health and sciences for students who are working as a speech-language therapist or a related professional. Many alumni of department of speech-language pathology of Hallym graduate school as well as graduate school of Health Sciences are working as a professor or a researcher in university or speech-language institute.
