Following the success of our Online Korean Studies Taster Program in January 2021, we would like to invite some of our international partners to join our Global Korean School Students' on their 'Cross -Cultural Communication & Korean Society Online & Live Summer Program.'

COVID-19 continues to cause disruption to international travel, making it difficult for some of our Korean students to Study Abroad. 

Introducing Hallym University Cross-Cultural Communication & Korean Society Online & Live Summer Program.

The Cross-Cultural Communication & Korean Society Online Program has been designed to appeal to both Korean and international students, with no prerequisite knowledge of Korea or Cross-Cultural Communication required. The course will be conducted 100% in English.

The five-day course is spread over six hours per day, starting daily at 18:00 Korean time.

(Although this is a free course for our international partner students, once students are nominated and are accepted on to the program, Hallym requests that all students complete  all of the course 

(This is vital as this will be a credit bearing course for our Global School Korean students).

International students will receive a certificate of completion (international students will only receive credit for completing the course, if previously agreed with their home university).

Understand how different people communicate whilst learning about contemporary societal issues in Korea. 

By the end of the course you will be able to reflect upon contemporary societal issues in Korea and compare and contrast the similarities and differences between your own country (whilst having further developed your interest in Korean Studies and Cross-Cultural Communication).

• Dates:  Monday June 28th to Friday July 2nd, 2021 
• Duration: Five days, 6 hours per day, (30 hours total)
• Required Language Ability:  Competent English writing/comprehension/listening and speaking skills are required. The course will be conducted 100% in English. 
• Number of Credits:  Not for credit, (unless previously agreed by your home university) 
• Certification: Online certificate for students who complete the course
• Course Fee:  Free  (for international students)

*Participation in this online summer program  does not count towards any university exchange quotas. 

Although this is a free course, Hallym University asks that once your students' apply for  and are accepted onto the program that they complete the course.

How can students apply the knowledge of the 'Cross-Cultural Communication & Korean Society Online & Live Summer Program' to their future career?

By joining this live online program you will have the opportunity to communicate and work with a variety of students of different nationalities', backgrounds and beliefs. 

Being able to understand and emphasize with people from different backgrounds is a key skill which employers increasingly look for in today's job market. 

You will discuss issues which currently affect Korea and compare and contract these issues to those in your home country. 

What kind of methodology will you use during the course? Will it be more theoretical or more practical? 

We have chosen a very hands-on and interactive approach. Students will take part in live group work discussions and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in which students will learn about subjects through solving 'open-ended' problems found within distributed literature. You will be required to submit a daily learning journal, via Google Docs at the end of each day. Feedback will be given too, ready in time for the next day's lectures. 

You will also take part in an individual presentation, during the final day of the course in which you present a short 8-10 minute presentation on one of the topics taught during the previous four days (students are free to select the topic which was of most interest to them).  

What skills will I have acquired after the course?

Your new skillsets will allow you to consider different peoples point of view, to reflect upon your communication strengths and identify areas in which you can further develop your skills. 

You will be able to analyze information, evaluate and provide solutions to problems encountered in dynamic work environments.   

What topics will be covered during the five-day course?

Day 1>      A Matter of Education-The Culture of Learning in South Korea

For the first class, we will get to know the often intense scholastic life that most young Koreans experience from kindergarten through high school and them on into university. We will examine what they study, where, when, why, and for how long and the ways this education-obsessed culture ultimately affects them. In the small-group discussions that follow, you will have the opportunity to compare the Korean system with that of your own country.

Day 2>      Korean Health and the Health Care System

In this class we will shed light on the workings of Korea's National Health Care system as well as various health issues that Koreans encounter. The pros and cons of this popular nationalized system will be explored in detail. Small group discussions will again allow the participants to compare their own countries' health care with the South Korean model.

Day 3>     Aging Korean Society and its Multicultural Future

In this class, we will take a look at the changes in the demographic of the Korean society as it pertains to age. We will discuss the factors that are causing this transition, including rapid industrialization, steady decline of birth rate, changes in societal priorities, and improved healthcare. We will then look at possible solutions to the issue based on models implemented by other societies, and discuss the possible multicultural future of the Korean society. In the small-group discussions that follow, you will share the changes in demographic of your own country and discuss possible solutions to this global issue.

Day 4>     The Changing Role of Women in Korea

In this class, we will take a look at the changing role of women in Korea and its impact. We will discuss the factors that led to these changes, particularly focusing on the rise of feminism in Korea, but also look at changes in the family model and societal norms that allowed women to enter the workforce and gain financial independence. We will then discuss where these changes could/should be headed by comparing it to the changes in other societies and discuss what changes are still needed. In the small-group discussions that follow, you will share the roles of women in your own country, and compare it to what's happening in Korea.

Day 5> Final day presentation:

Students choose one of the topics, covered in the previous four days and give their 8-10 minute presentation.
