Hallym University Cross-Cultural Communication & Korean Environment Online Summer Program was held Monday 11th to Friday 15th July, 2022.

Students from Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, Università degli Studi di Napoli "L'Orientale", Italy and York St John University, UK joined Hallym University Global School students for the online and live program that was taught 100% in English. 

Day one of the program started with students watching pre-recorded virtual tours of each other’s universities and cities.

Participants were able to compare and contrast the similarities and differences in environment between the cities of São Paulo, Naples, York and Chuncheon and then use this information as a platform for discussion during their break out groups.  

Day two saw students learning about natural hazards in Korea and their impact on the environment. Participants also discussed their experiences of encountering natural hazards in their home countries’ with the break out groups ranking the risks associated with different natural hazards in each locality.  

During the third day, students learned about Korean recycling methods, policy and sustainability goals. This was an excellent opportunity for students to discuss how recycling methods vary by country and to learn first-hand how cities of varying size and infrastructures manage waste. 

The penultimate day of the program saw the focus shift to the Korean DMZ and the changing land use and attitudes towards the area, from that of a perceived ‘dangerous’ area to today where ecological biodiversity, outstanding natural beauty and history of the DMZ are celebrated. 

The final day of the Cross-Cultural Communication & Korean Environment Online Summer Program discussed Development Vs Climate Change targets. 

Participants learned how Korea is adapting to the UN’s 2030 sustainable development agenda with a particular focus on energy, transport, agriculture, and fisheries. Students learned how Korea continues to develop sustainable cities with discussion focusing on each of the students’ home cities. Students evaluated their home countries respective Sustainable Development Goals.

The break out groups were modified each day allowing the participants to meet a wide variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures. 

All of the international students participating in the program were majoring in Korean Language, with some also studying additional subjects such as Korean Literature or TESOL.
