SEONGHYEON LEE and SARA PUSPARENI, master course students in the Department of Microbiology, College of Medicine, and their advisor, Prof. Won-Keun Kim, of the Department of Microbiology, won the travel award at the 2023 American Society for Virology. This is the second consecutive year that the Department of Microbiology at Hallym Medical School has won the award.

In the research on “Development of The Point-of-Care Multiplex One-step RT-qPCR for SARS-CoV-2 Using A Portable BioMeme Thermocycler”, SEONGHYEON LEE presented the importance of developing a specific target for SARS-CoV-2 and developing a molecular diagnostic technology for infectious diseases using field-applicable diagnostic devices.

SARA PUSPARENI was also honored for her work on "Amplicon-based MinI ON Sequencing Enables The Identification of A Novel Etiological Agent of Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome in Southern Areas, The Republic of Korea" and "Robustness and Sensitivity of Amplicon-based MinION Sequencing for Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus in Clinical Samples".

"This award demonstrates the potential of field-applicable molecular diagnostic technology for infectious diseases that pose a threat to humanity worldwide," said Prof. Won-Keun KIM. "We will contribute to the surveillance, response, and preparedness system for viral infectious diseases through rapid and accurate molecular diagnosis of infectious diseases that may emerge in the future."

"I will continue my research with the goal of developing a field-applicable genome-based diagnostic method to respond to and prepare for future outbreaks of co-infectious viruses," said  SEONGHYEON LEE.

"Through genomic characterization and surveillance of human common viruses using next-generation sequencing, I will continue to work on developing monitoring systems and diagnostics for viral infectious diseases," said SARA PUSPARENI.
